Monday, January 4th - A day at Lincoln

I did not blog yesterday due to a very long, tiring day at Lincoln. We rented a car and Brian drove us to Lincoln which is about 30 or so miles. It took awhile due to the round-a-bouts and a few missed turns. Brian did a great job driving on the wrong side of the road. Only got honked at 1 time.

This is the outside of the Lincoln Cathedral.

The cathedral ceiling. How on earth did they do this 900 years ago?

Some of the stained glass.

Another view from inside the cathedral.

The entrance to Lincoln Castle. There use to be a prison and insane asylum within its walls.

Inside the men's wing of the prison. Children as young as 8 were sent here and mixed in with the adults. An 8 year old boy was locked up for setting fire to a farmers hay stacks. He ended up dying of tuberculosis a year into his 10 year sentence.

This was one of the cells. As many as 7 prisoners were kept here during overcrowding due to disease spreading in other prisons.

This is me preaching from the pulpit in the prison chapel. Prisoners were put into separate little stalls to listen to the sermon.

This is the old insane asylum within the castle walls.

This is the wall at the top of the castle. We walked around the entire thing. The following pictures are all along the top of the wall.

The graveyard for prisoners within an area on top of the wall.
